Homage to The Spud is a celebration of the versatility of the potato in traditional and modern cuisine. It is a particular celebration of the special place the potato holds in Irish cooking, hence we hold it close to St. Patrick's Day. That and the fact that for those of us of Irish decent, St. Patrick's day is always a good day for a party.

The rules of the competition are simple. Bring your favourite potato dish (it must have potatos as the main ingredient) and enough to feed 4 to 6 people. Try to bring the dish warm already as oven space will be limited. At the end of the evening a loosely convened group of completely impartial judges (honest) will pass judgement and pronounce the winners in each category (two prizes in each category to keep everybody happy). No word yet on the actual prizes but it is likely they will be articles of clothing emblazoned with the official logo of the the event. Prize categories are as follows:

  1. Best Dish
  2. Most Creative Presentation
  3. Most Honoring of The Spud
  4. Best dressed (that's you, not the spud)
  5. Most unconventional (no dried potatoes please)

As a tribute to things Irish the prize categories this year also includes the best Irish drink. We are hoping that people will still remember to bring food!!

As a reminder here are the prize winners from previous year's events:

Best Dishes

Tanya Gleave - Stuffed Curried potatos
Georgina Petropolous - Traditional Greek Potatos

Most Creative Presentation

Peter Kiss - Large Baker potatos as candle holders with tea lights
Kaleena Sessions - Beautiful use of tiny nugget potatos as garnishes in a vegetable martini creation

Most Honoring of The Spud

Bruce Graham - Coconut Potato macaroons - Delicious and the only attempt to use the potato in a desert
Mike Longi - Fantastic presentation of a bottle of potato vodka surrounded by bags of potato chips artfully arranged in a Whinnie the Pooh hat box!

The standard has been fantastic in the past (except for the time Max brought McDonald's french fries) and we are expecting the same stiff competition this year!
