Figure 8

The figure 8 is one of the most basic knots around. It is essentially a granny knot with a twist. Although it will not undo itself, the extra twist does not allow it to get too tight and therefore it is easy to undo when then time comes. The figure 8 knot is generally used as a stopper knot at the end of a line through a block or cleat. Examples are at the end of the mainsheet to prevent running through the rachet block, or to stop a line from coming out of a cleat.

How to tie it

Step 1: Make a loop in the line, Step 1with the short end on top (tail on bottom).

Step 2:
Twist the short end step 2under the tail. The line should now look like an "8".

Step 3:
Put the short end dstep 3own through the original loop and pull tight.

Common Errors

This knot is pretty simple, and so there are not many common problems. If the knot is not working for you, it is probably due to one of three things:

  • the short end is not on the top in the first loop;
  • twisting too many times;
  • putting the short end through the wrong loop.

If you are still having problems, watch the demonstration video to the left to make sure you are performing all the steps correctly.

The figure 8 is also known as a stopper knot.
