Sheet Bend

The sheet bend is very similar to the bowline, except that it uses two lines instead of one. The purpose of a sheet bend is to join two pieces of line of different diameter. If you are wanting to join two pieces of line with the same diameter, a reef knot is probably what you want.

How to tie it

Step 1: Make a loop with one end of the line, making sure the tail is under the short end.

Step 2:
Using the end of the other line, put it up through the loop.

Step 3:
Bring the end around the tail of the first line (the one that makes the loop).

Step 4:
Take the end back down through the loop and pull it tight.

Common Errors

This knot is one of the more tricky ones. Because of that, there are several common problems people encounter. These are:

  • not checking that the tail is under the short end in the initial loop
  • mistaking the short end for the tail in step 3
  • not bringing the end back down through the initial loop

For more help, watch the demonstration video and remember the saying "the rabbit goes up the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole", where the rabbit is the end that you are tying with and the tree is the tail.

Trick to remember:

"rabbit goes up the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole"
