About the Instructors:

Sam Benson

Growing up, Sam split his summers between his hometown of Muskoka and the Kawartha Lakes where he was introduced to the sport of sailing through the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club. Sam went on to spend a number of summers racing and coaching in the Ontario sailing community. Last summer, Sam worked for the BC Sailing MOSS program and is excited to be returning for a second season.

Sam recently returned from six months in Cancun, Mexico where he was teaching sailing and windsurfing. Come fall, he plans to spend some time traveling while continuing to pursue the sport of sailing. Sam is looking forward to exploring the west coast this summer and meeting everyone involved with the program along the way.

Sam Nyhuus

Sam grew up in Ottawa but spent his summers sailing in the Kawartha Lakes, at Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club. He has been sailing since the age of six and has been an instructor for the past few summers. Sam enjoyed several years of racing at a competitive level but has since moved on to teach at clubs and camps in Ontario, Quebec and now, BC.

Sam is very excited to be joining the BC MOSS and to be working with Sam Benson. The west coast of Canada and Yukon territory are new areas for Sam and he is thrilled to have the chance to explore them this summer, to sample the west coast winds and to spread his love for the sport to BC/Yukon sailors.

Sam is an English and history student at Dalhousie University in Halifax and will be returning for his fourth year this September.

Chris Carberry

Chris discovered a passion for sailing at the young age of 24, when he stumbled upon a old windsurfer hidden under the deck of his in-law`s summer cottage. That day came with a lot of sunburn and bruises but also a lot of inspiration. Since then, Chris has raced on Geary 18`s in Oregon, bought a Tasar and travelled to many regattas with his wife. He also became a CYA sailing coach and organized the very popular Sockeye Cup Regatta and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Invitational Regatta at Cultus Lake. Chris has coached sailing at the Rocky Point Sailing Association and at Cultus Lake Sailing Club.

Chris`s background is 10 years in mechanical & civil engineering and is currently working on his commercial pilot licence. He is also a volunteer mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley and a volunteer fire fighter with the Cultus Lake Fire Hall. Chris is very excited to be with BC Sailing's MOSS program this summer, it`s Chris's passion to inspire people into the sport of sailing and he hopes that one day sailing will be our national sport.

Erik Nyhuus

This is Erik's first year of coaching sailing and he is thrilled to start off with such an adventure! Since he was six, he's spent his summers at the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club, developing his sailing skills alongside his brothers, cousins and friends. He's sailed with the club's silver race team in countless regattas throughout Ontario, but he's now looking forward to being an instructor and passing on his love for the sport to a younger generation.

Erik has just graduated high school in Ottawa and will be heading off to Dalhousie University in Halifax. He loves sushi, playing guitar, and his Ottawa Senators! Before tackling the East coast, Erik's pumped to see BC, a part of Canada he has not yet had the privilege of exploring yet!

Robbie Tullip

Robbie grew up around boats. He was harnessed into his family's boat. He tagged along to the dinghy dock at Royal Vancouver Yacht club watching his older brother sail. It was a given that he would join the race team and has sailed an Opti for many years. Having recovered from a knee injury, he is now looking forward to sailing a 29er. Robbie loves the outdoors, cross-country skiing, scouts, music and school. He loves to teach and has been helping younger sailors for several years both at home in Vancouver and at MOSS sailing camps. He has recently completed his coaching course and looks forward to joining  the MOSS team.
