Development - Learn to Powerboat
Certification Program
Instructors and Member Schools provide safe and competent training for power boaters leading to CYA certification in the following standards (the links will take you to the appropriate page on CYA's website):
CYA Member School status is conferred upon organizations who meet specified criteria, that use Canadian Coast Guard inspected vessels, and who uphold the policies and standards of CYA. Contact BC Sailing or click here to jump to a current listing of Member Schools.

Navigation |

Covers the theory required to navigate safely on offshore passages. This theory is applied in the offshore standard. |

Covers navigational theory beyond Coastal Navigation. Topics include standard radio navigation systems, radar and GPS, electronic chart display information, and weather for extended cruising voyages. |

Covers the theory required to navigate safely in coastal or inland waters. This theory is applied in the Advanced Cruising standard. |

Evaluates the candidate's ability to safetly operate a powerboat between 8-12 meters powered by an inboard engine. |

Evaluates the candidate's safe operation of a craft over 6 meters, and powered by an engine over 55KW (75 horsepower). To complete this standard, both Ashore and Afloat Skills are required. |

Evaluates the knowledge of the candidate and their safe operation of a craft under 6 meters, powered by an outboard engine under 55KW (75 horsepower). To complete this standard, both Ashore and Afloat Skills are required. |

Introduces novice boaters to safe practices in preparing to leave the dock, while underway, and when returning to dock. |
