Learn to Cruise - Basic Cruising Instructor

The Basic Cruising Instructor is the first in the series of Learn to Cruise (LTC) Instructor Levels.  It is important that candidates be current in their sailing skills and knowledge prior to entry into the Instructor clinics.

In addition to the Basic Cruising Instructors Resource Book and Candidate Workbook, there will be presentations by the Instructor-Evaluators (IEs) on teaching methods and techniques. The candidate will be required to prepare and present a classroom lesson from an assigned topic based on performance objectives from the Basic Cruising Standard. The Specific topic will be assigned during the clinic and the candidate will be given time to prepare a lesson plan. 


Prerequisites:
CYA website.

    • Be age 18 or older;
    • Have the Basic Cruising Standard;
    • Have the Coastal Navigation Standard;
    • Have 2 or more years sailing experience; 
    • Have Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Standard First Aid Certificate or nationally recognized equivalent and a current nationally recognized certificate in CPR level B or higher; and
    • Have Spark START or equivalent PCOC card.
    • Note: It is important that candidates be current in their sailing skills and knowledge prior to entry into Instructor clinics. The Sailing evaluation demands above average basic sailing and there is no time during the clinic for remedial work.
