Learn to Cruise - Offshore Cruising Instructor

Prerequisites:

  • Be 25 years of age or older;
  • Be a CYA Advanced cruising Instructor registered for the current year;
  • Have completed the Offshore Standard as a student;
  • Achieve 90% on the current Celestial Navigation Examination;
  • Achieve 90% on the Offshore Examination (which is an open-book, take home exam);
  • Have 300 hours teaching as a CYA Cruising Instructor with 50% or more of this time teaching on the water, and have taught at least 2 Advanced programs leading to CYA Advanced Standard certification;
  • Have a current Red Cross, St. John Ambulance or other nationally recognized Standard First Aid Certificate at time of certification
  • Have a current certificate in CPR level B or higher;
  • Have logged a minimum sailing experience of:
    a) A total of 1500 nautical miles of passage making as skipper or watch keeping crew accumulated on offshore passages of not less than 200 miles each; and
    b) A minimum of three separate offshore passages with at least two as skipper, including a passage further than 200 nautical miles from land;
  • Plan and execute an unfamiliar landfall as skipper;
  • Be recommended by an Offshore certified Instructor-Evaluator certified and registered for the current year; and
  • Demonstrate a competent understanding and ability to teach, evaluate and coach principles of advanced and celestial navigation.

Note: An offshore passage is defined as a voyage exceeding one hundred miles from the nearest land and is navigated by celestial and electronic means without visual or electronic reference to terrestrial objects.
