CYA Canadian Sailing Awards

CYA has announced the winners of the 2010 Canadian Sailing Awards.  BC athletes Erin Berry and Jessica Round (both RVicYC) and Alexander Heinzemann (RVanYC) are winners of the Youth Elite Female and Male awards.  BC coach Rob Douglas is the Coach of the Year, and the BC Sailing Mobile Optimist Sailing School is the Sail Training Program of the Year.  Congratulations!

The awards dinner will take place in Toronto at the end of February.

BC Sailing Circuit

The 2011 BC Sailing Circuit regatta schedule has been posted on the website circuit.bcsailing.bc.ca.  Sailors of all ages are welcome at all Circuit events!  Our first regatta is Kitten Cup at Royal Van on April 30-May 1, followed by Spring Dinghies at Royal Vic the weekend after.

Mobile Optimist Sailing School (MOSS)

The Mobile Optimist Sailing School (MOSS) was started in 2007 to bring sailing programs to kids ages 6 to 15 in communities where such a program does not currently exist.  Our goal is for these communities to eventually run their own sailing programs.

MOSS program saw 334 young sailors in the 2010 season, and over 1000 sailors since the program started in 2007.  We hope the momentum built from the success in 2010 will carry over to another great year.

Applications for the 2011 MOSS program have been received and the schedule is being finalized.  Keep an eye on the website moss.bcsailing.bc.ca, as the schedule will be posted as soon as it is finalized!

Long Term Sailor Development (LTSD)

For the past several years the CYA along with the provincial associations have worked to develop Sailing’s Long Term Sailor Development (LTSD) Framework.  The framework aligns the pathways for persons to enter our sport, develop through to international racing excellence and remain active in sailing for life.  As such, the updated LTAD framework is considered to be the backbone for the CYA’s strategic plan…’A renewal Strategy for Canadian Sailing’.

The LTSD addresses the following:

-       Renewed Sailor/Athlete Programming

-       Developing Coaching Expertise for each stage of sailor development

-       Establishing a Competition Structure appropriate for developmental stage and age of sailors

-       Established development framework for Officials

-       A strong network for Yacht and Sailing Clubs

For more information on the LTSD, go to www.sailing.ca and click on the LTSD link at the bottom.

For Coaches, Instructors and Club Directors…

2011 Instructor Clinics

Registration is now open for the 2011 Instructor Clinics.  Information about the clinic is on the BC Sailing website http://wm.p80.ca/Org/Org105/content/Training/Instructing/LTSLTR/index.asp.  The first clinic will be the Program Manager clinic at the end of February.  This course is recommended for all aspiring head coaches and program directors.

Instructor Job Postings

BC Sailing has a page job postings page for instructors looking for summer jobs.  We encourage all clubs looking for instructors to send an email to crew@bcsailing.bc.ca to post a short job description.  Instructors looking for employment this summer are encouraged to visit http://wm.p80.ca/Org/Org105/Content/Training/Instructing/jobs.asp.

Training Membership Policy

Over the past 5 years, BC Sailing’s membership numbers have stayed steady with the membership numbers we receive from clubs, but the membership we have are often the older sailors and not the real users of our programs.  The Sport BC funding formula has changed over the past 5 years and the block funding BC Sailing used to get no longer exits, rather the funding is based on the number of members we have in the different age brackets.  A new training membership policy has been proposed by BC Sailing with the plan for implementation in 2012.  Feedback on the new policy can be sent to Tine at tmpsailing@shaw.ca.  The policy can be found here http://wm.p80.ca/Org/Org105/Content/About Us/TrainingMembershipPolicy.asp.

For Race Officers and Judges…

Race Committee is fun, social and gets you out in the environment.  It’s an entertaining way to spend an afternoon or weekend.  All clubs support youth and adult sailing, so it’s a simple way to support your club’s sailing program.  Contact your local yacht club or sailing centre and get on their race committee volunteer list.

For those wishing to become certified as a race officer, BC Sailing is offering a Club Race Officer seminar this weekend, Feb 5-6 at the Jericho Sailing Centre.  See the note on the website for more information. http://wm.p80.ca/Org/Org105/Images/Documents/BC SEMINAR ANNOUNCE.pdf.

There are still a few spaces left, so contact Nancy in the BC Sailing office at 604.333.3628 or crew@bcsailing.bc.ca if you want to register.

If you have anything to add to the next edition of the BC Sailing newsletter, send an email to crew@bcsailing.bc.ca.
