2012 Coaching Courses
 
Note: Most courses requires a minimum of 6 candidates.  BC Sailing will send out an email at least 1 week before the start of the course to confirm the location, times and inform candidates of details.  Be sure to sign up early, as many courses fill up fast.

To become certified as trained and qualify to teach CYA/BC Sailing courses, coaches must have successfully completed the following:
  • CANSail Fundamental course
  • Coach boat safety course (prerequisites: PCOC and First Aid)
  • Technical course (prerequisites: CANSail Fundamental and PCOC)
  • have a valid nationally-recognized first aid certificate, minimum Emergency level (St. John Ambulance or Red Cross are recommended)
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Card
  • CYA Long Term Sailor Development online module - available here
  • paid annual registration fee of $160 to CYA (for new coaches, this is due after you become trained)
  • *coaches who will not take a CANSail module in 2012 must take a CANSail Accreditation Module in order to teach CANSail courses.  Coaches must take either the update module or a CANSail module by December 2014, or as required by their employer (yacht or sailing club).  Coaches can also receive this training by upgrading with a CANSail technical course or professional development module (this includes new coaches).  More information about CANSail is available here.

CANSail Fundamental Theory Course:
This is the theory course all coaches must take prior to their technical course.  The course is offered over two full days.  The course fee includes online access to the manuals.

CANSail Technical Course
The CANSail Technical course is the practical application of the theory learned in the Fundamental course.  It gives coaches a chance to get on the water and coach real sailors with assistance from the learning facilitators.  The course fee includes online access to manuals and lesson plans.

Coach Boat Safety
*The re-certification course on April 9 is only for coaches who hold a valid Boat Rescue or Coach Boat Safety course and need to re-certify.  Re-certifications are also welcome at all other Coach Boat Safety courses as well.
The Coach Boat Safety course is a practical, on-water safety course that will prepare coaches for possible emergencies.  The course fee includes online access to the course material.  It is expected that coaches review this material prior to the course. 
Prerequisites: Pleasure Craft Operator Card (required) and Emergency-level First Aid (strongly recommended)

Opti Module/Community Coach
The Opti Module is a one-day professional development course designed for coaches who will be working with young athletes ages 5 to 13 in optimist dinghies.  The Community Coach Module is a one-day course for new coaches who want to start as an assistant coach or volunteer with a sailing program.  Community Coaches cannot certify CYA levels.  The Community Coach module will focus on optimists, with some discussion of other training boats for youth sailors like 420s and FJs.

Opti Race
This is a new course offered this year for coaches with some basic optimist experience.  Candidates will work with optimist racing team sailors and will focus on developing racing skills and new coaching techniques specific to opti sailing and coaching sailors ages 10-14 who are interested in racing.

Double-Handed Clinic - Chutes and Wires
The Double-Handed Module is a one-day professional development course focusing specifically on double-handed boats.  The main focus will be rigging and skill development in 420s, with some discussion about high performance 29ers and 470s.  Upon successful completion of this course, coaches will be trained to teach Chutes and Wires.

Program Manager
The Program Manager module is open to coaches and others looking to take on an administrative role within their learn to sail program.  Topics covered include marketing, registration, communication and safety.  This course is not recommended for first and second year instructors.

CANSail Accreditation for Existing Coaches
This module is required for all existing coaches wanting to coach CANSail levels and not participating in a technical or professional development course in 2012.  Existing White Sail and Bronze Sail levels can be certified until December 2014.  Clubs can host a CANSail Accreditation Module for their coaches upon request, depending on availability of learning facilitators.  To request to host an Accreditation Module, please email crew@bcsailing.bc.ca
This module is free for all BC registered coaches and instructors.

Coach Evaluation

Evaluations can be arranged by contacting crew@bcsailing.bc.ca and arranging for the coach to attend a race team training session with an Evaluator.  Evaluation clinics may be added throughout the year.
