Racing Development - Canadian Youth Sailing Team

Each year, the Canadian Yachting Association selects at least 24 sailors for the Canadian Youth Sailing Team.  In 2006, 7 of the Youth Team members were from BC.  The goal of this team is to prepare athletes for competition at international events.  All members of this team are entitled to receive coaching from CYA national coaches at clinics and regattas.

Team members are selected based on the following criteria:

Male Single-handed: Laser

  • Total of 6 male single-handed sailors
  • Top 3 at 2006 CYA Youth National Championships, AB
  • Top 3 age-eligible at 2006 Fall National Qualifying Regatta, BC

Female Single-handed: Radial

  • Total of 6 female single-handed sailors
  • Top 1 age-eligible at 2006 Radial North Americans, NS
  • Top 2 age-eligible at 2006 Radial youth Worlds, CA
  • Top 1 at 2006 CYA youth National Championships, AB
  • Top 2 at 2006 Fall National Qualifying Regatta, BC

Male and Female Double-handed: 29er

  • Total of 3 male and 3 female teams
  • Top 1 male team and top 1 female team at 2006 CYA Youth National Championships, AB
  • Top 1 age-eligible male team and top 1 age-eligible female team at 2006 29er Canadians, NB
  • Top 1 age-eligible male team and top 1 age-eligible female team at 2006 29er North Americans, ON

Male and Female Board: Neil Pryde RS:X

  • TBD

In each case, finishers must be in the top 50% of their class fleet.


Of these members, 1 sailor or team from each class will qualify to represent Canada at the ISAF Youth World Championships.  To qualify, the sailor or team must compete at the Youth Worlds trial event and must meet the performance qualifying criteria at a selected major international event.  The sailor or team must be 18 years of age or under as of December 31, 2006 and must be Canadian citizens.  The Youth Worlds trial events are as follows:

Male Single-handed: Laser

  • First place eligible sailor at the 2006 Laser NQR, BC; and
  • Top 50% performance at one of:
    • 2007 Laser Midwinter’s East; or
    • 2007 Laser Midwinter’s West; or
    • 2007 MOCR

Female Single-handed: Radial

  • First place eligible sailor at the 2006 Radial NQR, BC; and
  • Top 50% performance at one of:
    • 2007 Radial Midwinter’s East; or
    • 2007 Radial Midwinter’s West; or
    • 2007 MOCR

Male Double-handed: 29er

  • Top youth male team at 2007 29er Midwinters (location TBD); and
  • Top 50% of male fleet at 2007 29er Midwinters

Female Double-handed: 29er

  • Top youth female team t 2007 29er Midwinters (location TBD); and
  • Top 50% of female fleet at 2007 29er Midwinters

Male and Female Board: Neil Pryde RS:X

  • TBD

Multi-Hull Open: Hobie 16

  • TBD
