Racing Development - Canadian Youth Sailing Team
Each year, the Canadian Yachting Association selects at least 24 sailors for the Canadian Youth Sailing Team. In 2006, 7 of the Youth Team members were from BC. The goal of this team is to prepare athletes for competition at international events. All members of this team are entitled to receive coaching from CYA national coaches at clinics and regattas.
Team members are selected based on the following criteria:
Female Single-handed: Radial
Male and Female Double-handed: 29er
Male and Female Board: Neil Pryde RS:X
In each case, finishers must be in the top 50% of their class fleet.
Of these members, 1 sailor or team from each class will qualify to represent Canada at the ISAF Youth World Championships. To qualify, the sailor or team must compete at the Youth Worlds trial event and must meet the performance qualifying criteria at a selected major international event. The sailor or team must be 18 years of age or under as of December 31, 2006 and must be Canadian citizens. The Youth Worlds trial events are as follows:
Male Single-handed: Laser
Female Single-handed: Radial
Male Double-handed: 29er
Female Double-handed: 29er
Male and Female Board: Neil Pryde RS:X
Multi-Hull Open: Hobie 16
